Vladimir Putin has confirmed his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election in Russia. The President of Russia announced this decision yesterday local time. Putin made the announcement at a ceremony to award Russia's highest military medal to fighters fighting in Ukraine.
Putin is almost certain to win a fifth term as president. As a result, he is also getting the opportunity to lead the ongoing war against neighboring Ukraine. The war started in February last year.
Russian presidential election will be held on March 17. The upper house of the Russian parliament announced the date of the presidential election last Thursday.
If elected, the 71-year-old Putin's 24-year leadership tenure will extend another term. However, officially he spent 8 years as the Prime Minister. Putin is now the longest-serving Russian ruler since former Soviet Union leader Joseph Stalin. Putin's decision to run was no surprise. His popularity in Russia has increased due to the ongoing military operation in Ukraine, which has given wind to the sails of patriotism.
A lieutenant colonel named Artayum Choga received the 'Hero of Russia' gold medal. While accepting the medal, he urged Putin to contest the election again. Later, this military official told reporters, "He (Putin) will compete."
Earlier, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said many people called on Putin to run in the election.
